Lhasa Gonggar Airport

Lhasa Gonggar Airport is an airport that serves the city of Lhasa, Tibet, People’s Republic of China. It is located about 98 kilometers south of Lhasa on the southern banks of the Yarlung Zangbo River.

Airport description


Lhasa Gonggar is located more than 3500 metres above sea level making one of the highest airport in the world. Its runway, at 4000 metres is designed to handle wide-body aircraft in the thin Tibetan air. The airport began operation in 1956 with flights to Beijing and Chengdu commencing that March. Recent addition included the expansion of the existing terminal in 2004.

It is also connected to the rest of China which includes cities such as Beijing, Chengdu, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Hong Kong, Chongqing, Xian, Xining, Kunming, Diqing and Chamdo Region and an international route connects Katmandu, Nepal and Lhasa.

Lanzhou Airport

Lanzhou Airport also known as Lanzhou Zhongchuan is an airport in Lanzhou, Gansu, People’s Republic of China . It is located 70 km north of downtown Lanzhou.

Kunming Wujiaba International Airport

Kunming Wujiaba International Airport is an airport located in Kunming, Yunnan, People's Republic of China. The airport is located 4km southeast of metropolitan Kunming.

The airport is among the oldest airports in China, with a history which can be traced back over 100 years to the early 1900s, when Wujiaba Airport was first built under the supervision of local warlord, General Tang Jiyao. During World War II, the airport was expanded to accomomdate the operations of the legendary "Flying Tiger" squadron led by U.S. Air Force Lieutenant Claire Lee Chennault.

By the end of 2007, the annual passenger flow at Kunming Wujiaba International Airport has reached a new record high of 15,725,791, making the airport the in China. In terms of cargo traffic, the airport was the airport in 2007. Kunming airport was also the airport by traffic movements.

Due to fast expansion of the metropolitan area and limited land availability, the growth of Kunming Wujiaba International Airport is likely to see major constraints in the near future. Local government and airport authority have decided to move all operations to a new airport site, which is being planned, within 5 years.
